The Ankle Express Trail passes over the rugged and beautiful west bank of Greenleaf Lake in Greenleaf State Park, OK. The lakeshore trail is generally easier but still technical. The ridgeline trail requires more effort. The south loop, trailhead to Mary's Cove, is well maintained but the north loop can be overgrown. There is NO water or possibility of access once you cross the swinging bridge so I carry a lot of fluids with me.
My first run on this trail was late in October. I crushed oak mast beneath my shoes, saw wild turkey, deer and got lost. It was wonderful. I only get to run here once every year or so but it's always a good experience.
